PROJECT PULL SELECTS LEADERSHIP COACHES
FOR NEWLY-CREATED ACADEMY PROGRAM
Project PULL, a nonprofit initiative serving Pilipino American
youth, has selected four outstanding college students to
serve as "leadership coaches" for its inaugural Academy program
in late June. The four coaches, chosen from a nationwide
applicant pool, will challenge high school youth to develop
their leadership skills and awareness of Pilipino American
community issues during the one-week program at Stanford University.
The 1997 Project PULL Academy Leadership Coaches are:
Rachel Acuna-Narvaez. Ms. Acuna-Narvaez, a junior at Stanford
University, is majoring in Psychology with a focus on Children and
Society. Rachel served as chair of the 1997 Pilipino Youth Leadership
Conference at Stanford. Her diverse community service experience also
includes work with the homeless. Ms. Acuna-Narvaez hails from
Colorado.
Catherine "Kay" Fernandez. Ms. Fernandez, a sophomore, is majoring in
Social Welfare with a minor in Business Administration at UC Berkeley.
Kay is also the Program Coordinator for UC Berkeley's newly-created
"bridges" Multicultural Resource Center. Her community involvement
includes extensive experience with Berkeley's Pilipino Academic Student
Services (PASS) program. Ms. Fernandez is from Simi Valley,
California.
Salvador "Sal" Macasieb, Jr. Sal was selected outstanding PASS Intern
of the Year for the 1995-96 academic year. A graduate of Hogan High
School in Vallejo, California, he has been extremely active in
Berkeley's Pilipino student community. He has served as Co-Treasurer
for the Pilipino Association of Scientists, Architects, and Engineers
(PASAE) and High School Outreach Co-Coordinator for PASS. Mr. Macasieb
is a sophomore majoring in Chemical Engineering.
Leilani Roxas Pamplona. Ms. Pamplona is a 1997 graduate in Ethnic
Studies and Urban Studies and Planning from UC San Diego. She has
facilitated directed studies on Pilipino American History and Identity
and served as a Resident Advisor. Active in the Kaibigan Pilipino club
and several youth service organizations, Ms. Pamplona was recently
nominated for UCSD's Outstanding Senior Award. She is from Concord,
California.
The leadership coaches will facilitate seminars on college preparation,
leadership skills, and community issues with small teams of high school
students. In addition, the coaches will develop online academic and
community resources with a focus on Pilipino American youth
leadership. Their projects will be published on The BARANGAY,
Project PULL's website at "http://www.projectpull.org/barangay.html".
Project PULL is a San Francisco Bay Area-based nonprofit initiative
dedicated to developing innovative academic and leadership
resources for high school and college students interested in
Pilipino American community issues. Academy 97 is organized by
Project PULL in partnership with Stanford University's Asian
American Activities Center with support from Filipinos for Affirmative
Action and the echoing green foundation.
