PULL Academy? The Project PULL Academy Leadership Challenge and College Preview is an intensive, one-week summer residential program for high school students who are interested in learning about college opportunities as well as current issues affecting the Pilipino American community. Academy 99 will be held from Sunday, June 27th, through Saturday, July 3rd, at the Stanford University campus in Northern California. The Academy curriculum combines culture, technology, leadership, and fun into a unique and memorable learning experience. Project PULL welcomes applications from motivated freshman, sophomores, or juniors (sorry, seniors!) throughout the United States. You need NOT be Pilipino to apply. Are you a high school student interested in participating in the Academy program? (files are in MS Word 97 for PCs)
POSTMARK DEADLINE: TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 1999. Are you a college undegraduate interested in a summer internship with Project PULL? The Project PULL Leadership Coach internship is, arguably, the most innovative summer experience for college undergraduates interested in serving the Pilipino American community. To be successful, interns must go through one week of mandatory training prior to serving as Leadership Coaches. During Academy week, coaches are challenged to "lead by example" as they work with high school students from across the nation. After the Academy, this year's Leadership Coaches will work on a newly-created, community-based research project. The Leadership Coach seven-week internship (excluding training week) is a paid position and lasts from Sunday, June 27th, through Saturday, August 15th. Training week begins on Monday, June 21st, and continues through Friday, June 25th.
APPLICATIONS REVIEWED ON A ROLLING BASIS. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1999. What can I expect as an Academy graduate? After graduation, Academy alumni rely on each other and other members of the Project PULL community (a network of educators, performers, student organizers, young professionals, and other community leaders) to tackle tough leadership issues in their respective areas. At the Academy, participants should expect to be challenged. That's all we'll say for now. If you graduate, only you can decide what's next. Who is involved with the Academy? Academy Alumni Academy alumni work with the core team to raise funds and develop ideas for the future programs. Instructors & Presenters During Academy week, Knowledge Activists meet members of the Project PULL community, who volunteer their time to educate and dialogue with participants. Program Partners (institutional affiliates) The Academy program is organized in partnership with the Asian American Activities Center (A3C) at Stanford University and Filipinos for Affirmative Action (FAA), a community-based organization serving youth, immigrants, and the elderly of Alameda County in Northern California. Academy 99 is partially sponsored by grants from Banque Paribas and Hewlett-Packard Company. Core Team (recent college alumni) The Academy Core Team is responsible for organizing the Academy. Core Team members are selected on the basis of personal motivation and expertise in a variety of areas. Members represent a broad range of personal backgrounds, educational experiences (e.g. community college, four-year private universities), and career choices (e.g. health care, finance, and technology).
